Gathered

Long-Distance Relationship Gifts

Most long-distance gifts stand in for the other person: a lamp that lights when they touch theirs, a bracelet with their coordinates, a pillow that smells of them. They are lovely, and they are still a parcel. What two people apart are short of is somewhere to be at the same time: a fire to sit by, a game to lose, something left for the other to find in the morning. A Gathered house is that place, in the browser, with a key for them.

Make a house for them
The living room of a Gathered house in the evening: a lit fire, a grand piano, a record player and a cat asleep on the rug.

See what it’s like

An evening in, from two cities.

Left for them to find
Fire’s lit. Come and sit.

A fire lit before they arriveLight the fire in the living room. When they come in, they see it burning, and who lit it.

Their name on the door

Ideas to start with

Things to do there, and to leave there.

  • A fire lit before they arrive
  • A tune left on the piano
  • Their name on the door
  • Photographs on the cord

Do it together

Things to do there together

A fire lit before they arrive

Light the fire in the living room. When they come in, they see it burning, and who lit it.

A tune left on the piano

Two octaves, and a record button. Play something, even badly, and leave it for them to find when they wake up.

The pool game, then a rematch

Press, pull back, let go. Take turns on a call and keep the score somewhere neither of you can quietly change it.

Leave something

Notes to leave for them

“Fire’s lit. Come and sit.”
“Left you a tune. Don’t laugh.”
“Same time tomorrow? I’ll make tea.”

Make it yours

Ways to make it the two of yours

Their name on the door

Choose “A house for” and type their first name. It goes on the door, and the key is theirs.

Photographs on the cord

The study has a cord you both hang photographs on, so the visits you had and the ones you are planning end up on the same line.

Pins in the globe

Mark where each of you is, and where you will meet next. It is the most satisfying pin to move.

The jar

One small thing a day, folded up, for the other to take out. It suits a time difference: one of you writes at night, the other reads at breakfast.

Why it works

A place, not a parcel.

Distance is not short of messaging. It is short of somewhere to be. A shared house gives two people a reason to turn up at the same time and things to do once they are there, and what one of you leaves, the other finds later, which is the part that works across time zones.

Complete the occasion

Other gifts that pair well

The next visit, in writing

A date for the next visit, even one that is only a promise, gives the evenings in the house something to count towards.

Something that smells of home

A jumper worn for a week, or the soap from your bathroom, posted in a padded envelope.

The same meal, cooked twice

Pick one recipe and cook it the same evening in both kitchens, on a call, then compare.

Questions

Before you begin.

Do we need to be online at the same time?

No. Much of the house is for leaving things: a tune on the piano, a note in the jar, a message on the telephone. When you are both in, you see each other there, can talk, and can play the games for two.

Does it work across different phones and computers?

Yes. It opens in the browser on a phone or a computer, with nothing to install, so it does not matter what each of you has. On a phone it can be added to the home screen like an app.

Who else can see our house?

Only you and whoever holds your key can go inside. From the street, a house shows the first name on its door and how its outside looks, nothing from inside, and you can rename the door or take the house off the street.

What does the house cost?

Nothing, during early access. Every room is free to try, with no sign-in, and keeping the house is free too, with the key. A house kept during early access stays free for as long as Gathered runs.

A painting of family photographs, flowers and a record player around an open book.

Another idea

A book from everyone who misses them.

When it is more than the two of you, send one link and let everyone add a page: a message on a painting, a voice note, a song, their photographs. Free to make, and free to send during early access.

Give them a key

Make the house, put their name on the door and send them the key. The terrace and the living room are free to try before you decide.
