Christmas Gift Ideas for a Boss from the Team

A present for a manager is awkward in an ordinary way: nobody wants to spend too much or too little, and a bottle passed round for signatures says very little. What a good manager rarely hears is what the year looked like from the other side of the desk. A book from the team, one page each, says it plainly and keeps the conversation away from money.

Sound worth including

The team’s year in one recording

Everyone records one sentence about the year: the launch, the office move, the quarter that nearly went wrong. Played in order, it tells the year as a story.

The song from the office party

Or the one someone played too often at their desk. A shared joke about music is the kind of detail only the team would know.

A message from someone who has moved on

A former team member who still credits this manager writes the page with the most weight. One link reaches people who no longer have a company email.

Make the words easier

Message starters

“You took the blame for the March deadline in front of the directors and gave us the credit in June. We noticed both.”
“I came back from leave and you had kept my projects exactly as I left them. That happens less often than you might think.”
“Best meeting of the year: the one you cancelled because we had already solved it.”

Bring the story back

Moments worth writing down

The project that nearly went wrong

Every team has one from this year. Describing how the manager handled it is more specific than any thank-you.

The call they made for someone

Time off granted without questions, a promotion argued for, a mistake absorbed quietly. The person it happened to is the one to write it.

What they say in every meeting

The phrase the whole team can quote. Written down by five people, it becomes a running joke that belongs in the book.

What changed when they arrived

For a newer manager, how the team worked before and after. For a long-standing one, the thing every new hire is told on their first day.

Why it works

A gift that keeps the details.

The obstacle to a team gift is logistics: someone passes an envelope, someone else is on leave, and the card goes round the office unsigned by half the people. One link lets everyone add a page in their own time, including colleagues in other offices, and the organizer sends one book before the office closes for the holidays.

Complete the occasion

Other team gifts that pair well

A pooled gift with a fixed amount

If the team wants to give something bought as well, agree one small amount per person in advance so nobody has to guess.

A team lunch in January

Booked, and written into the book, it gives the gift a second moment once the holidays are over.

A donation from the team

To a cause the manager supports, which sidesteps the question of gifting upward altogether.

Questions

Before you begin.

Is it appropriate to give a boss a Christmas gift?

Etiquette advice generally discourages individual gifts to a manager, since they can look like seeking favour, and supports a group gift from the whole team instead. A book of messages suits that well: it comes from everyone, and what it holds is thanks rather than money.

How do we include remote or hybrid colleagues?

They only need the link. People in other offices, on leave or working different hours add their page when it suits them, which a card passed round the office cannot manage.

When should we start?

The first week of December. Leave two weeks for pages to come in and send the book before the last working day, when people start leaving for the holidays.

Should senior leadership add a page?

Ask the team first, and keep the book from the people the manager works with every day. A page from above can change the tone from thanks to performance review.

What does a Gathered book cost?

Nothing, during early access. Making the book, inviting people to add to it and sending it are all free, however many pages and people it holds. A book sent during early access stays free for as long as Gathered runs.

Gather the team

Start the book, share one link in the team channel, and set the date for the last working day before the holidays.
